چکیده

Joegoldsteinite, a new sulfide mineral of end-member formula MnCr2S4, was discovered in the Social Circle IVA iron meteorite. It is a thiospinel, the Mn analog of daubréelite (FeCr2S4), and a new member of the linnaeite group. Tiny grains of joegoldsteinite were also identified in the Indarch EH4 enstatite chondrite. The chemical composition of the Social Circle sample determined by electron microprobe is (wt%) S 44.3, Cr 36.2, Mn 15.8, Fe 4.5, Ni 0.09, Cu 0.08, total 101.0, giving rise to an empirical formula of (Mn0.82Fe0.23)Cr1.99S3.95. The crystal structure, determined by electron backscattered diffraction, is a Fd3m spinel-type structure with a = 10.11 Å, V = 1033.4 Å3, and Z = 8.

Murchisite, Cr5S6, a new mineral from the Murchison meteorite

Murchisite (IMA 2010-003), Cr5S6, is a new chromium sulfide mineral, discovered in the Murchison CM2 meteorite. The type material occurs as one subhedral crystal (1.3 × 4 mm in size) in contact with low-Ni iron (“kamacite”), martensitic iron, schreibersite, and a Ca-,Al-rich glass, all of which are included in an isolated forsteritic olivine grain in the meteorite’s matrix. The mean chemical co...

Iron meteorites: Crystallization, thermal history, parent bodies, and origin

We review the crystallization of the iron meteorite chemical groups, the thermal history of the irons as revealed by the metallographic cooling rates, the ages of the iron meteorites and their relationships with other meteorite types, and the formation of the iron meteorite parent bodies. Within most iron meteorite groups, chemical trends are broadly consistent with fractional crystallization, ...

Discovery of Buseckite, (Fe,Zn,Mn)S, a New Mineral in Zakłodzie, an Ungrouped Enstatite-rich Achondrite

Introduction: The Zakłodzie meteorite, a moderately weathered find discovered near the village Zakłodzie, Poland, is an ungrouped enstatite-rich achondrite ascribed to an impact melt [1] or internal melting within the parent body [2]. During our nanomineralogy investigation of the Zakłodzie meteorite, a new Fe-dominant monosulfide mineral, (Fe,Zn,Mn)S with the P63mc wurtzite-type structure was ...
